DuckHunt Devlog 1

I have been working on this project as part of a Games Bootcamp, and of course I have been able to showcase my work to others, however many aspects of the game still require significant work and investment. For example, there are bugs that occur when the game is restarted/loaded from the main menu, as well as, issues regarding object referencing. I will still like to reflect on what went well, and what went wrong.

What went well

  1. I was able to implement the basic mechanics and game loop, this is also known as the Minimun Viable Product. At least everyone at the bootcamp was able to shoot the ducks and score points.

What didn't go well

  • I investing a lot of time implementing the basic mechanics, so I did not have enough time to polish the bugs that occured within the game.
  • I have realised the importance of prioritizing the base game, but also making sure that this is implemented early, so I can spend more time polishing the product.

What I have learned for the future.

  • Playtesting, bug fixing, polish are all vital parts of game development, so it's important to make sure that enough time is allocated, like if you have four weeks, the MVP should be complete by the 14th day, all extras done by the 21st, and then spend the last week polishing.
  • Of course, the SCOPE of the game also needs to be considered. It's very common to run out of time because you decided on implementing things that were way to ambitious.

Of course, this game is still in development. This postmortem is due to the fact that it was showcased in a buggy/incomplete state.

I plan to complete Duck Hunt by Friday 23rd. With polish and bug fixes.
